ARTIST STATEMENT

I mimic bones unbound by anatomy, so my work can sit between allusion and replication. I base sculptures on drawings, treating them like ‘plans’, to construct, seemingly natural, artificial forms.

I create familiar forms to embody human traits, which retain ambiguity regarding age, history and weight. Natural forms like ribs and vertebrae influence my sculptures.

My work embodies ‘internal claustrophobia’, stemming from my own overwhelming need to crack the joints in my fingers, due to tension between my skin and bones. I strive to create the same tension using the personification of forms. They shake, fall over, are nervous, are trapped, hit a wall and seem unsure of themselves. I chose human traits so the viewer can empathise with them.

My use of music combined with the illusion of shaking, gives the forms life. The lyrical content also influences my drawings.

I observe physical relationships, creating mysterious narratives of time in a space.

BIOGRAPHY

Sadie Gayer is an artist and musician, born and based in London, England.

She grew up exploring art and music through her parents love of both. Early childhood memories of listening to her dads extensive vinyl collection, collecting rocks, going to antique furniture markets and writing her first songs, set her on a creative path. Her Booba’s (Yiddish for Grandmother) career as a Rock & Roll singer in the 1950’s greatly inspired Sadie to pursue a similar creative life. Sadie studied Foundation at Central Saint Martins (2019 – 2020) and is currently completing her undergraduate degree in Sculpture at The Slade School of Fine Art (2020 – 2023).

Notable exhibitions include the 2021 Shoreditch, London group show ‘Chroma’, which she organised, curated and exhibited in. Other shows include the 2023 ‘Interim 3rd Year Slade Group Show’ at the Candid Arts Trust, the 2019 group show ‘Painting Beyond Itself’ at The Bomb Factory, London and the 2019 group show ‘The Language Show’ at Central Saint Martins. Sadie has also contributed to online publications such as Issue 18 ‘From The Drained Pool’ of Form IV (2020) created by artist Isabel Mallet and Issue 1 of ‘The Mail Art Project’ (2021).

Sadie works with sculpture, drawing and music, creating installations and frequently playing live with her band Sister all over London. Her love of process and music is what her practice consists of.
